Will Sotomayor's Presence Change Things?

(WSJ) Judge Sotomayor's ascent to the high court wouldn't immediately change the balance of powerK. Melton Graphite because she would be replacing Justice David Souter, a regular member of the court's liberal bloc. But Republicans recognize that the next pick could be more significant if a conservative justice steps down. They are hoping to pick up Senate seats in the 2010 midterm elections, so that their votes could represent more than a symbolic protest.
